IP ratings for outdoor lighting in India

Most outdoor lighting that fails in India does not fail because the IP rating was too low. It fails because the rating was read as a promise it never made.

What the two digits actually mean

An IP code has two digits. The first is protection against solids, the second against water. Each is a separately defined laboratory test under IEC 60529.

Three things the rating does not tell you

1. The digits are not cumulative. IPX7 is an immersion test. IPX6 is a jet test. They are different tests, and passing one does not imply the other. An IP67 fitting has been immersed in still water — it has not been proven against a pressure washer or driving rain. If a fitting must meet both, it has to be rated for both.

2. IP68 is not a fixed standard. IEC 60529 does not define the IPX8 conditions. It requires only that they be more severe than IPX7, and that the depth and duration be agreed between the manufacturer and the user. So “IP68” alone is not a specification — always ask to what depth, and for how long.

3. A high IP rating does not predict long life. The test is performed once, on a new sample, in a laboratory, at room temperature. It says nothing about what the enclosure will be like after three monsoons and forty summers.

What to look at instead of the IP number alone

A well-built IP65 fitting routinely outlives a poorly-built IP68 one. The rating describes one test on one day. The construction describes the next ten years.

On CRI outdoors. Our outdoor ranges are Ra 70+ as standard, with Ra 80+ available on request. That is deliberate, not a corner cut: over asphalt, concrete and planting, lumens per watt buys more useful light than colour fidelity does. Where an outdoor scheme lights a façade or a hotel entrance and colour genuinely matters, ask for 80+.

Five mistakes worth avoiding

  1. Reading IP67 as “better than IP65”. For rain and washing down, IP65 or IP66 is the relevant test. IP67 is about immersion.
  2. Accepting “IP68” without a depth. The standard requires the conditions to be agreed. Ask what they were.
  3. Specifying by IP alone on the coast. Material, finish and fixings decide it there.
  4. Forgetting the pit drains. In-ground fittings sit in whatever the pit holds.
  5. Ignoring ambient temperature. Heat shortens both LED and driver life, and it is the failure nobody attributes correctly.
